Belt-Driven Bikes

Text

I just saw possibly the sexiest photo I’ve ever seen over on Gizmodo.  Here it is again:

Trek belt-driven bike

It’s a picture of a belt-driven bike.  I know, right?  I didn’t even know such a thing existed, and when I saw it it completely blew my mind.  Apparently the entire belt-driven drivetrain is lighter than the just the chain on a regular chain-driven bike.  It doesn’t need to be lubricated, it engages instantly which means a smoother ride, is virtually silent, and doesn’t succumb to chain stretch, which means it’ll last probably two to three times as long as a regular drivetrain.  The only downside is that since the belt is in one piece, and can’t be broken apart like a chain, the rear triangle needs to be modified in order to get the belt in and out.  However, as these become more popular I think you’ll see more framebuilders making that an option.  Until that day, though, I’m going to be really tempted to plunk down for the Trek District.  It’s $930 but man is that a sweet bike:

Trek DistrictThe colors and geometry are just out of this world.  At first I wasn’t a big fan of the upright handlebars, but after drooling over the picture a bit I’ve decided I actually quite like them, especially how they’re bent slightly inwards.  And look at that chainring; super minimalist.  They even colored the stack bolts orange.  Like the wheels.  Oh man.  I’d pretty much sell my soul for those wheels.
