Take the Red Book

Text

About 98% of what I read is science fiction (or fantasy).  The other 2% are books about programming or design, or non-fiction.  Which makes it a little awkward when some people recommend books to me.  I can’t even count how many times I’ve been told to read Kite Runner, or something by Zadie Smith, or something else in that same vein.  Previously, years ago, I would have read them, but I’ve reached a point where I (horror upon horrors) judge a book by its cover.  I just know in advance that I won’t like them.  But what I didn’t know exactly was why.  I knew part of it was N.A.D.D.-related, but the other part, while partially formed in my head, I couldn’t quite articulate on.  Hence the title of this entry, Take the Red Book, which is an article by columnist Clive Thompson that he wrote for Wired, but that he also posted on his personal blog.  This is the best explanation I’ve ever read of why I read science fiction and why other books bore the shit out of me.
